At the heart of Jesus’ teaching on divorce is this: Marriage is about becoming one.

Now, we can all imagine what that means. It’s a neat, catchy phrase; seems like something we can hang our hat on. But what does it really mean? Sometimes the best way to understand what something is, is by understanding what it is not. Sometimes we do this with our kids: “loving your brother does not mean kick him when he makes you mad.” Hearing that, a boy can understand a little something about what it means to love his brother. Looking at divorce is like that for marriage. You want to understand what I mean when I say, “marriage is about becoming one?” Let’s look at its opposite. Divorce.
