What is the Church?
Delivered May 4, 2008 on Ephesians 2:11-22 by Carter Sanger
Preachers talk a lot about all kinds of felt needs (which are helpful) and the major doctrines of God and salvation, but we tend to neglect talking about the church. How do we understand exactly what the church is and why it is important? Paul addresses the heart of this question in his letter to the Ephesians as they wrestle through what it looks like to have Jews (the perennial insider) now combined with Gentiles (the former outsiders). While it might be easiest for the two people groups to belong to two different churches because of their differences in culture, education, societal connections and past experiences, they are brought together to be one new man. Paul explains that they are together built into a temple for the Spirit of God.
