As we delve deeper into Solomon’s mind he asks us to test our vaporous world to see what kind of leverage man can gain over it. Can man control the vapor or grasp the vapor with wisdom? How about pleasure? Or perhaps all of our work? And the conclusion is, no…all is vapor. He takes us into the tension to the point of despairing over all of life and yet concludes by saying “there is nothing better for a man to do in this life than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in his work.” This is a precursor of the passage that holds together Solomon’s tour of life and it begs us to ask the question, “If I cannot control the vapor, where do I turn? How do we live in a vaporous world and why should we go on?”
