In my recent travels this summer, both to Germany and then to Africa, I found that I needed to exchange my dollars for Euros and then Naira, respectively, if I wanted to have any money to spend. You have to have the currency of the place you are living to enjoy life. This goes for enjoying life in the kingdom of God as well. Paul concludes his first letter to Timothy on instruction for the rich so that they might have a proper perspective on real riches. Are they building their life with the currency of the world or the currency of the kingdom of God? The same question rings true for us. Are we rich in good deeds? Making the transition from one currency to another is not automatic. We may know the exchange rate, but until we are using the new currency regularly, we will still “think” in our old one. Until the new currency becomes our primary source of wealth, we will always be making that mental conversion when we spend. As Christians living in the kingdom of God, we must learn how to think in terms of this new currency. Thankfully, Paul gives us instruction on how to make this transition.
