Repentance

Delivered 10/19/2008 on Job 6:24-30 by Carter Sanger

Repentance seems like a word only heard in church. But in reality, an aspect of the concept of repentance is very familiar to all of us. At its core, repentance means to turn from one thing to another - to change. At a national level we hear both presidential candidates clamoring for change (or we might interpret repentance). Businesses that struggle are left forced to repent. And as individuals nothing calls to repent louder than suffering. The trouble is, there are lots of ways to change. Just turning around when you’re going in the wrong direction doesn’t get you necessarily in the right direction. What does an effective repentance look like? What does a godly repentance look like and how does it differ from a faulty repentance? When we look at Job’s life and discourse with his friends we can see what a godly repentance looks like and as we go through Job 6:24-30 we’ll compare godly repentance to a faulty repentance. We’ll look at the action taken, the result, and the destination in each.
