There are two kinds of people in the world – those who believe they’re on the road to life and those who don’t believe there is such a thing. Jesus explains, “enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”1 Of those who believe they’re on the road to life, some are and some are not. The writer of Proverbs writes, “there is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death.” John writes his letter to those who believe they’re on the road to life. For those that actually are, he wants them to have assurance. For those who believe they are but are not, he wants to warn. One of the worst things the church can do for people is confirm a wrong belief. If a person is on the road to destruction and we assure them they’re okay, we only make them comfortable on the road to destruction.

If you believe you are a Christian, then John offers you some tests to evaluate that belief. In this first test, John explains that someone who truly believes in Christ walks in the light.

This is what we want to explore. What does this mean exactly? What is the light? What does the light reveal? How do we walk in the light?
