At the heart of the Old Testament promises we find this: “I will be your God and you will be my people.” The people of God are set apart from the rest of the people in the world to be God’s treasured possession. I likened this last week to a wealthy man who buys a piece of art at an auction. The piece of art he wins is set apart from the other works and the buyer must leave a down payment that promises he will return. This down payment that God leaves for you is His Holy Spirit. This is what we want to consider this morning. The Church is the building in which the Holy Spirit dwells. That’s what holds so much promise for the people of God. We think in such individual terms today that there is a strong tendency to think that every individual Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. While there is certainly a particular giftedness that every Christian receives from the Holy Spirit through his faith, the Bible doesn’t speak of individuals being indwelt by the Holy Spirit in the same sense that it speaks of the Church as being indwelt by the Spirit. Paul writes, “you are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” It is the Church, the individuals as they are built together, that God has chosen for his dwelling place. The implications of this are huge in the way we are to live as believers of Christ. We must be committed to the Church!
