Renewal: Helping the hurting

We believe that Katy, just as other cities across the world, suffers from the self-centered leanings that we all share. We also believe that God is in the business of renewing people that we might grow in our commitment to and enjoyment of God. In addition to the Scriptures, our own hearts tell us that we are in need of renewal. Our goal is to see social, spiritual and cultural renewal within the context of our families and our city.

Families: Renewing family discipleship

There are multiple reasons to focus on family renewal. Perhaps the most obvious is the demographic makeup of Katy. Over 81% of Katy’s population is made up of families, so it makes sense that if we want to be an agent of renewal for the city of Katy that we would focus on families. Cornerstone, as well, is made up primarily of families. But the more driving reason comes from understanding God’s means. God created the family to be the primary means of building His Kingdom. Parents have a unique promise from the Lord for their children (Acts 2:39). Having such a great promise, parents are particularly called to impress upon their children the teachings of the Lord (Dt 6:7); to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Eph 6:4). In terms of renewal, we find John the Baptist coming to prepare the way for Jesus by “turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their faithers” (Mal 4:6, Lk 1:17).

Bringing Faith and Life Together: Building a Biblical worldview

We live in a world that tends to compartmentalize life. We have our work calendars, our social calendars, our kids calendars, and our church calendars. We strive for success in our careers, success in our marriages, success in our parenting, success in our social circles, and success in our church life. The struggle is that we operate differently within each of these compartments of life. What we see in the gospel is that all of life falls under the “spiritual” compartment. We were made in the image of God to work, we were made to live in community with one another, we were made to worship. Our thinking needs to be renewed so that we can see how our work, marriage, parenting, friendships are all spiritual callings in and of themselves. Only then will we begin to see personal renewal in our lives, in our families and in our city.
